That acid aids with breathing down food so that it can be used for fuel by our body. When you have acid reflux disease, the acid doesn't stay in place. Instead, it is able to move up the esophagus.
The acid is going to be very bitter tasting and it will create a burning sensation in your chest. This acid can be very harsh too and that means it is going to start eating away at the lining in the esophagus. This can also lead to inflammation that gets worse and worse. There are many ways to deal with acid reflux. First, you need to take what you eat into consideration. Some people find that eating spicy foods can trigger it.
Eating large amounts of food at any meal can also cause it to occur. If you tend to skip meals and then eat heavily, change your method. Eat three to five small meals per day and cut down on the portions. This will give the body food in the stomach for the acid to help breakdown throughout the day. It will prevent large amounts of acid from building up due to the stomach being empty for many hours at a time.
Some women find that they suffer from acid reflux disease while they are pregnant. It can last for a small period of time or for the duration of the pregnancy. It is a good idea to avoid eating late at night as that can increase the amount of acid. Chewing gum, taking antacids, and other over the counter products can all help to reduce the amount of acid the body creates.
It is also a good idea to be able to sleep with your head propped up so that you are less likely to allow the acid to come into the esophagus. Don't lie down in the hours after you eat a meal as that can also trigger acid reflux disease.
